{HISTORY}

Back in the 1930s, when refrigerators were a new wonderland of design potential and opportunity, dishware manufacturers started teaming up with fridge makers to make custom serving and storage pieces that would fit inside the boxy interiors of this exciting new kitchen appliance. Square shapes, stackable features, and mini bins and jars made great use of space while keeping foods and fridges neat and tidy.

This sea green ceramic pitcher was part of the organizational crew that looked stylish both in the fridge and on the table. Skinny in width with a long grab-and-go handle, a tilted spout, and an ice shield, this type of water pitcher was both functional and pretty.

During the 1930s-1950s, Hall made a variety of fridgeware styles and shapes for several refrigerator brands, including Westinghouse and possibly Norge. While we couldn't find any visual examples of this pitcher in vintage advertisements,  we do know this shape and style, with its off-center spout, arched handle, and ribbed striping, was referred to as both Nord and Norge, which might suggest that it was made to fit specifically inside Norge refrigerators.

By the late 1950s, this style of pitcher had been reshaped slightly and renamed the Riviera shape, so while it is tricky to date this one to a particular time period of manufacture, we do have a pretty good sense of the 1930s-1950s window in which it was produced.

All that being said, it's classic in design,  fitting in with both contemporary and vintage styles nowadays. Featuring a color that is not quite peacock and not quite teal, it mostly resembles Mediterranean sea green, making it a fun color, especially for the warm weather months. Fill this one up with a freshly made pitcher of lemonade, margaritas, iced tea, or your favorite flavored water, and you’ll have a server set for summer and outdoor entertaining by the pool, beach, or lake.
