Hua Yan Chinese Painting Print – Bird Willow

Hua Yan's bird perches in the willow with plum blossom for perfume: the small bird drawn with lively attention, the willow's strands falling in fine lines, plum branches adding their winter flowers. The willow-plum-bird trio is the classic "three friends" of the transitional seasons — the willow for spring's arrival, the plum for winter's endurance, the bird for the life between. It is a small, complete spring — or winter's end, which amounts to the same, the year's hinge.

The bird is the composition's bright note: alert, compact, drawn with a few sure strokes — the eye's single dot, the body's quick curve. The willow provides the graceful setting, strands falling like rain frozen mid-air; the plum its symbolic endurance, pale blossoms on dark wood. Ink dominates, with the blossoms' paleness as the tonal accent. Hua Yan's lyrical hand keeps everything light, the touch barely there.

Small bird scenes suit bedrooms, studies, intimate walls — anywhere a small, perfect spring is welcome. It arrives as the unmounted huaxin core only, with no frame or mounting, and gentle framing suits its gentleness. A light, lovely piece.
